Shearing at Penbwlch![]() Sunday 28 Jun 2009 [15:12]
Traditional methods for a living industry in rural wales.
In the heart of farming country , the woollen industry is all around us . remnants of a thriving industrial revolution and the continuing industry for todays` market .
It`s come late this year ; shearing at Penbwlch , at the far end of my village .
Hard work on a hot day in June.
What used to be a village community affair along with dipping & haymaking is now down to family members & this year instead of Wyn doing the shearing himself , he`s had help from local farmer Daniel Lloyd whilst he gets the silage cut elsewhere.
But the same old methods apply , although now with electric shears instead of hand ones used 50 years ago ( and later still on some small farms ) .
Wyns` father Dilwyn , still nimble in his late eighties scrambles over the hurdles and chases the ewes through from the pen . Where Daniel makes it look easy , expertly turning the sheep over to shear in a couple of minutes . Brother inlaw John folds & sorts ready for the wool bags & collection by the Wool marketing board and the job is done for another year .
Much to the relief of everyone ; including the sheep !
