Nineteenth Century Window Pane check from Aberaeron.
There was a woollen mill at Aberaeron in Ceredigion since 1830. Originally founded by Absalom Pryce and then sold to Thomas Rees. John Parry who had operated his own loom in albert Street became an apprentice to Thomas Rees in the 1860s. In 1870 Thomas Rees emigrated to America selling the Mill to John Parry whose family ran the mill for the next 90 years Located on the banks of the river alongside much industry including a water driven forge 7 just below Chalybeate Well.
The Aeron Mill produced narrow width blankets in undyed yarns and flannel to make shirts & trousers. during the 1930s the mill was modernised & expanded to make tweeds & knitting yarn. Famously winning competitions at the National Eisteddfod in 1933, 1934, 1936 & 1939. **
Like many mills The Second World War ended trade for the Parrys and it closed in 1951. It was the last of the industries to survive in Aberearon & is now converted to residential dwellings.
I have a pair of these blankets in my own collection & this is the first one I have offered for sale.
In steel grey , With natural dyes of Indigo for Navy Blue & Cochineal for Raspberry Pink in a specific design to the mill which predates modernisation in 1930. Made in two pieces & hand sewn centre seam. A cloth of exceptional quality.
