Conker Brown & Cream checkerboard C1900

Woven at Star Mill in Llanfyrnach, Pembrokeshire at the turn of the last century . Using undyed wool from Jacobs & Welsh fleece from the Thomas flock at Plas Fferm, Eglwys Wen. The family of the eminent Surgeon Sir John Lyn Thomas.

Woven on a four heddle narrow width box loom at Star; two pices of cloth then sewn together to create a larger bedcover. Machine sewn across the warp. A traditional Two & two twill with 2" alternating squares of colour. Star produced this very simple pattern in Indigo & Cream also.

It is rare indeed to have such detailed provenance & I have one of the pair in my own private collection. My thanks to Janet Thomas for her information & photographs.

In lovely condition, with its share of historic darns & newly repaired warp end stitching.

This is a fabulous example of simple yet quality craftsmanship with the very best provenance you will get.

The third image shows the Thomas family with Daniel James Thomas standing infront of Plas fferm, Eglwys Wen. This picture was taken sometime before 1926.

The last image shows Star Mill approached by a rough farm track.

Mild detergents such as Woolite & a cup of salt to keep colours fast is recommended on antique blankets. Do not use conditioner & do not over wash ( once a year is plenty) spills should be dealt with immediatley .
