Pencader carthen.

Pencader district was known for its carthenni: a handful of late C19th century mills having a head start commercially on the Teifi Valley, having had the railways arrive & connection to Carmarthen some 25 years before. using single width flannel looms , hand weaving & dyeing using natural dyes. Knitting socks to order & weaving vast quantities of flannel for clothing.

A superb Pencader carthen in a thickened ( fulled) cloth. Pure wool dyed with what appears to be natural dyes. A checkerboard of Chestnut, Cream & Lavender. Batchh dyed yarns which create variations in colour & a speckled appearence on lighter blocks. A fabulous combination simillar to that often seen in Harris Tweed is acheived in some blocks where Lavender combines with Chestnut. Deep Chestnut blocks add depth.Border designs integral to the design travelling along both fringed sides. Repeated bands of Chestnut & lavender.

Machine sewn warp ends & twisted fringes on the two long sides. Hand woven on a narrow width loom & finished with a hand sewn centre seam. Fulled to finish.
