Teifi Valley plaid.
A mid C19th narrow width blanket from the Drefach Felindre area of the Teifi Valley. At atime of huge production for this region,the parishes of Llangeler & Penboyer were already well known for the quality & production of flannel. with most famillies employed in some aspect of the industry by the time the railways reached Henllan in 1876.
Dyers, fullers, carers , spinners & weavers. Drapers, seamstress`, quilters & knitters. with women & children employed as bobbin winders, gleaners & finishers. There were more than 50 mills in this tiny area , perched on every river bank to harness the power of the fast running Teifi & its tributaries.

As flannel moved out of fashion , migrants from the big textile districts of Newtown walked with their belongings on their backs from Powys to Carmarthenshire taking advantage of the new advances in manufacturing. Coal from the South coming in on the railways & providing new markets in the South and beyond. Mills moved from Water power to steam in the age of Coal. Clothing in return the heavy industry of the Swansea Valley . Buoyed by the Great war & ministry contracts the Teifi Valley enjoyed something of an Indian Summer in the Wool trade. Rural mills either suffered or prospered with fluctuating wool prices & the lottery of ministry contracts. Many closed or burnt down soon after the war. Only to be buoyed once more with Second World War.
This blanket is flannel weight. Woven on a narrow width flannel loom before modernisation in the early Twentieth Century. Pure wool with a high twist in a strong herringbone twill. A typical Teifi valley plaid in Honey Gold & Cream with solid bands in Charcoal, Lavender & Cream. Machined warp ends & a hand sewn centre seam.
Collectable & functional. Machine washable, warm & hard wearing.
