Teifi Valley early C20th plaid.
Autumn colours of Buff & Cream herringbone twill with bands of Bitter Chocolate, cream, Lavender & Chestnut creating a typical Teifi Valley plaid. Border designs on each side. Machine sewn warp ends & a hand sewn centre seam.
Blankets such as these were woven up & down the Teifi Valley late C19th & early C20th. Woven on narrow width hand looms in back rooms, outbuildings & upstairs weaving rooms above rows of tiny cottages. Hundreds of people earning a living or supplementing a wage with a domestic market for woollen goods. Woven as out workers for the dyeing factories , on their own heath Robinson looms cobbled together often from an earlier life in Montgomeryshires flannel industry. Home made looms of simple construction, necessarily narrow to fit into small spaces , these looms were originally intended for flannel weaving where a narrow width is all that is required to produce the lighter weight woollen cloth for suiting, dress making & shirts.
When these became unfashionable , industrious Teifi Valley weavers used them to produce blankets: heavier weight but necessarily wider. This was over come but joining lengths side by side to create a bigger piece to cover the bed. In this way bedcovers & blankets were produced well into the 1930s & in some instances the 1950s. Early tapestry was produced in this way too , predominantly in the North.
This pure wool bedcover was clearly intended to cover the bed as it has border designs on each side.It would have covered more blankets beneath.
