Chestnut paid blanket
Warm colours of Buff & Cream in a herringbone twill with a plaid design created from stripes in Denim Blue & Bright Chestnut with solid Cream .
A typical Teifi Valley plaid the kind of which was produced by countless mills at the turn & through the first quarter of the Twentieth century. Bought in pairs often direct from the mill, at markets & in drapers & small shops up & down the South West.
Woven often, from wool provided by the customer who would choose their design from a limited selection. Selecting their colours frugally as these incrementally increased the cost. Often leaving more wool than was required to complete the order . The surplus becoming part payment at least for their finished goods. The surplus wool being used to weave more product to be sold at market , such as Crymych or Tregaron.
Thus the quality, the weight & the finish would vary tremendously from weave to weave , with the mill adding better quality fleece to the mix to improve short staple & poor quality fibres.
These were utilitarian blankets, not fashion items & in this way the farmer would cheaply provide warm bedding for his family. Sometimes other bartering was employed: eggs, potatoes or a days` labour at hay making. The mills had no need for fancy designs & there was little competition for what was effectivley a captive customer base. Most customers would buy within a 10 mile radius with no other form of transport than their own two feet. The exception of course was the product sold at market which may well find its way a lot further from home. Special patterns seem to have been produced purely for market too.*
A finely woven blanket with a high twist. Machine sewn warp ends & hand sewn centre seam.
