Steel Grey, Black & Scarlet striped blanket.
A splendid quality C19th Welsh blanket in bold colours of Steel Grey, Scarlet & Black. A repeated stripe running down the length of the cloth in alternating colours. With a typical repeated stripe border down both sides, criss crossing at the corners.
Woven on a narrow width flannel loom & finished with a hand sewn centre seam & machined ends.
Usually bought in pairs, the customer would make their order after shearing in early summer. Returning a few months later to collect the blankets, yarn & flannel, perhaps a pair or two of socks or a few flannel shirts. Often a surplus was exchanged & this would form at least part ,if not all of the payment for the order. The surplus was then used to create product for sale at important markets such as Tregaron or Crmych.
These independent weavers did not all have mills however: most would have a narrow width loom in a back room or out building with perhaps a spinning wheel. They would often just sell the cloth , either flannel or blanket yardage for the customer to make up. Sometimes they would offer dressmaking or sock making. Depending on the skills available within the household. Flannel quilts were sometimes made up from scraps of flannel too .
