Brick Red Plaid.

A super old Welsh carthen C1920. Hand woven in Carmarthenshire using a high quality fine two ply yarn. In a fairly simple Plaid of Warm Brick Red , Cream & Liquorice Black. Speckled yarns creating a soft fleck. Border designs down two sides.

Finished with a flat nap , Machine sewn edges & fringes on the two long sides. In lovely condition . a sprinkling of historic darns mapping its service through almost a Century of use.

The iconic welsh Carthen was designed to cover the bed. With fringes to help the drape , skimming the floor either side of the bed. Produced initially & on hand looms ( later power assisted looms) & predominantly in the Pencader district of Carmartenshire.Often using natural dyes , early German analine dyes & undyed yarns. 

Once the growth of Yorkshire Pattern Mills was established accross The Upper Teifi Valley & following the coming of the railways to Henllan & Newcastle Emlyn some 25 years later than Pencader. A lighter weight & more colourful version was produced in most of those New Mills on Power assisted shuttle looms. 

Wash as wool. Dry naturally.
