Swansea childs patchwork C1900
An interesting little quilt , one of a number bought very recently on a trip to the city . Undoubtedly made by a child as she practised her sewing skills at the turn of the last century .
A patchwork top of Damask biscuit coloured fabric & pieced printed cottons . Pretty fabrics on a white ground with Pink Hydrangeas & deep red Roses , later ( 1920s`) prints with stylised trees & birds . A pale blue cotton backing with some sun fading .
Peppered with emboidered numbers & words ( which I cannot make out !) . The number 60 appears in several places neatly embroidered with the same biscuit coloured thread . Hand piced and quilted with traditional motifs around a central medallion : diamonds & semi medallions in each corner .
Freshly laundered and in great condition , it has some deterioration to the damask fabric in places .
Perfect as a wallhanging or for the nursery ,a lovely piece of South Wales social & textile history .
