Cambrian mills Plaid.
Another new pattern added to our popular Heritage collection.
A traditional herringbone twill with a Teifi Valley plaid typical of the region mid century. Always bought in pairs & given in their hundreds as wedding gifts, these pure wool Welsh blankets were the staple bedding for generations of Welsh famillies.
In a post war boom of high demand for the mills of the Teifi valley, a new & blossoming tourist trade coupled with high demand from South Wales saw the most industrious mills of the area produce blankets & carthenni on a huge scale. Sold from the Mills own shops on site & off in towns such as Aberystwyth & Aberaeron. They were wholesaled to other mills, shops & the new fashionable department stores in Swansea. Purchased by small village shops such as Sip Bont in Pontrydyfendigaid , back packers such as Malcolm Black in Swansea & Megan Jones in Carmarthen Market. surplus stock in quiet months was sometimes sold door to door by Mill staff & delivered in their company vans to tourist hot spots like Betws Y Coed.
It was the fashion post war to put blankets & quilts away for the bottom drawer of unmarried girls. Paid for on the book in the little shops & door to door salesmen. Resourceful Mill owners like Clara Lewis at DERW would take money out of a girls wages each week to pay for their bottom drawer blankets , sometimes without being asked to!
This pattern & colourway is an archive design woven at Cambrian mills in Drefach Felindre, reproduced on Raymond Jones Dobbcross loom & finished on site in what is now the finishing plant of The National wool Museum.
Teal Green & Cream twill , bisected by Chocolate & Carmine Red, solid Cream & a Buttercup Gold detail. Blanket stitched with Carmine Red.
