Aberaeron check blanket in Grey , Red & Blue.
Distinctive colours from Aberaeron mill. which produced narrow width blankets at this three storey mill on the bank of the fast flowing Aeron a few hundred yards before it flows into the harbour in the seaside town. It can still be seen , just below the weir & lovers` bridge: a white building facing the river now residential apartments. The leat ran from much further up stream , just under the weir . Cutting across the field from right to left. This has now gone , making way for the council development of housing.
Grey yarn seems to have been favoured by the mill in this period, cheap to produce & created by carding varying degrees of Black fleece with White. Along with Scarlet & Indigo, simple patterns were created to serve the local community.
This example is of a fairly soft yarn in gunmetal Grey with bands of Indigo & Scarlet creating a bold check. Machined central seam & warp ends. Some darning consistant with its great age, Circa 1890.
I have three of these delightful blankets purchased recently from Madroilyn. They have never traveled very far from home. Just 10 miles or so in 120 years. I may be tempted to sell them as a pairs, although my inclination is to keep at least one in Ceredigion.
One has gone back to the mill care of Rhian.
