Cilcennin Mill 1930s Striped blanket.
An unusual colourway from Ben Thomas at Cilcenin mill in Ceredigion. Using up , I guess, some Orange yarn , it has been added to the more usual Cream & Grey & spun together creating a muted Orange ground between the distinctive repeated stripes of Indigo & Crimson. A broad repeated stripe used as a border design in Indigo, Crimson, Grey & a narrower Yellow.
Colours all documented in the National archive & achieved with German analines on natural fleece. Woven on a narrow width loom & hand sewn centre seam. Machined warp ends.
This lovely blanket , in immaculate condition came with one other ( Glynarth NL02 ) from a delightful house in Aberaeron. Lived in by two elderly sisters , this was their parents house , who had moved to it from Cilcennin in the 1930s. The house was completely unchanged from that era from the decoration to the furniture. A time capsule overlooking cardigan bay.
Highly collectable blanket from my favourite local mill. Ben Thomas was known locally as Ben factri. Cilcennin mill was run as a secondary business to the 60 acre holding rented from Ty Mawr Estate. it only ever used narrow looms & worked in conjunction with Llanrhystud factri a few miles North & Llanfair Clydogau Pandy a few miles South.
