Woven by Ben Thomas or possibly his father John at Cilcennin woollen mill ( Ben Factri). A signature design for this small rural mill in Ceredigion. Just a few miles North from Ty Zinc.
Woven on a narrow width flannel loom in a heavy 2 ply yarn. Cream ground with repeated single broken lines in Violet & scarlet running down the length of the cloth. Border designs each side by way of a much broader set of stripes & multiple single ones between.
Although designs from this milll, like all the others of this type, varied little. Customers would be offered a limited choice of colour in single widths & by the yard. These single widths would be sewn together either by the customer or the mill. Some by hand, some by machine. Weight & finsh of the cloth might well be the biggest variation as it would depend on the quality of fleece used . With a rural & very local customer base bringing in fleece to the mill after shearing in exchange for flannel, blankets & carthenni, yarn or maybe made up product such as socks or shirts. A bartering system operated & little money might actually change hands at this point. The customer often paying by leaving more fleece than was required for his job. The excess being made up into product and sold by the mill owner at market ect.
This lovely example, bought locally has been machine sewn. a heavy but soft 2 ply yarn, hand spun ( perhaps at Llanrhystud factri) and woven at Cilcennin. Complete with a few weaving faults & slubs. Faint mark in bright sunlight otherwise fabulous.
