Woven on a narrow width hand loom, the kind that were used to weave thousands upon thousands of yards of flannel during the C19th. Small looms that fitted in upstairs weavers rooms , back rooms & outhouses. With a cost of a couple of shillings , these wooden looms could be adapted & assembled to fit in the smallest spaces. In rural Wales , away from the huge Industry of Montgomeryshire, they were often a secondary income for weavers. Be they small holders or perhaps the local Postman ( Talgarreg Ceredigion).
In rural mills , which could be found in every Parish & usually sited on the lowest point of a fast flowing stream , these narrow width blankets necessitated joining two pieces together to create a bedcover. Using the same looms to weave flannel for clothing , shawls & heavy fringed carthenni. The original Cottage Industry.Narrow width looms in secondary rural mills were used right through to the 1950s in some cases but most were abandoned in favour of power looms by the end of the 1930s.
An area where sheep was the main crop, meant a steady flow of farmers bringing fleece after shearing in the summer. Orders would be placed for a limited range of products & variations. With incremental charges for dyes & fancy finishes such as fringes. Often no money would change hands at this initial order. With frugal customers preferring to barter their own goods & services ( potatoes, flour, a day in the field at hay making) or to pay by means of surplus fleece. This extra fleece being weighed & set against the cost of the order. The weaver would then make up extra product which would , in turn be sold at local markets such as Tregaron or Crmych. important meeting places for trade.
