Glynarth Mill Teal Green stripe.
Glynarth Mill in Aberarth a few miles North of Aberearon, Ceredigion sits on a fast running stream flowing down into the sea through a pretty village of Nineteenth century cottages almost piled on top of each other on the hillside. there were two mills here in the Nineteenth Century, as well as the woollen mill run by Hugh Pugh there was a corn mill further along the stream which became a blacksmiths later in the early Twentieth century . The meandering stone built leat can still be traced up through the woods, where a sluice gate controlled the flow.
Prior to 1939 this little mill produced blankets, tweeds & carthenni for a local, domestic market & knitting yarn after the war until its closure in 1957.
Using a mixture of undyed yarns in Cream, Greys , Browns & Black & a combination of both vegetable & early German Analine dyes. The Pughs produced fabulous colourways that are contemporary today. Simple stripes, typical of Ceredigion ; in a herringbone twill. woven on a four heddle box hand loom in two pieces & then hand sewn together by the customer to form a larger cloth.
This lovely example is in undyed Grey , created by carding together Cream & Black fleece, Cream & Teal Green. A border pattern on the foot end creating an overcheck in each corner.
In wonderful condition, it has a couple of tiny neatly executed darns consistant with age. Machine washable, this old Welshman is suitable for regular, respectful use.
A collectable Welsh blanket with provenance .
Measures 82" x 70"
Mild detergents such as Woolite & a cup of salt to keep colours fast is recommended on antique blankets. Do not use conditioner & do not over wash ( once a year is plenty) spills should be dealt with immediatley .
