Honey, Jade Green & Tangerine.

An Early Twentieth Century double cloth quilt from North Wales. Bright contemporary contrasts of Jade Green & Tangerine on a Honey coloured ground with Black detail. Luminous analine dyes from an era where Plant dyes & Early German dyes were often used together. Later replaced by modern synthetic dyes they were a bi product of Carbolic Soap. As the market was dominated by Germany , new processes were quickly developed in the USA as the dye draught of the World wars ceased supply.

Woven on a Dobby loom in an instantly recognisable pattern known as Caernarfon for its association with County. It was produced by many mills in the North including Vale of Conwy, Penmachno & Jacob Jones. It is most likely , however to have originated in Scotland & many weavers from Scotland, Ireland as well as Wales emigrated to the Colonies in the 1800s alongside Scandanavians. Weaving drafts for simillar designs occur across all of the British Colonies & are likely to have made their way back as gifts & new patterns into the next Century. Double cloth pattern books for Wales are said to show over 100 different designs for that period. Although Caernafon clearly became the pattern of choice.

It has seen many corruptions over the years & can be traced very specifically by particular additions & changes almost decade by decade through the Twentieth Century. It was produced by nearly every Mill from the 1960s onwards in the South West & ironically for visitors to the famous Anna Davies shop in Bettws Y Coed , the bedcovers they were buying were as likely to be from Carmarthenshire as Conwy. It remains ,to this day, the most popular Welsh pattern.

Woven using clean yarn & finished on the loom, a 2 ply plain weave with two sets of weft & warp. Double sided with a different design on each. This example from the mid 1920s incorporates a border design & is blanket stitched each end. A couple of minor marks on close inspection.
