Mid Century DERW mill Caernarfon tapestry
A fabulous mid century Caernarfon tapestry probably woven at DERW mill who began weaving Caernafon mid 1950s. Known as Vrnwys pattern , each weaver had their own loom to tend in the busy mill. Vrynwy worked as a weaver & his wife a bobbin winder before they married.
This version was woven from about 1956 on Dai Lewis` Dobby loom . With the pattern draft modified for a more demanding commercial industry & now with border designs on the selvedges only, the warps were blanket stitched to accommodate a continuous run of cloth.
Two sets of warp & weft creating a heavy double cloth known as tapestry.
A colourway produced for Gilmores of Dorset.
Measures 88" x 66" ( 224cm x 168cm).
